Independent Living FAQ
Can I keep my physician?
We encourage our Independent Living residents to continue their relationship with their own physician whenever possible. If, however, it becomes inconvenient to travel to your physician or he can no longer provide the services you require, you may choose our Medical Director, Dr. Aubrey Knight. Dr. Knight visits one day a week and specializes in Geriatric Care.
Do you allow pets?
Yes. We recognize the importance of pets to their owners as well as the rights of other residents not to be disturbed or inconvenienced or have their health and safety threatened. We limit pets to dogs, cats and birds. As a responsible pet owner, we ask you to abide by the pet policy which will be sent upon request.
What if I have an emergency or need help in my apartment?
Our apartments have a nurse call system as well as an emergency pull cord in the bathroom. We also encourage residents to wear a pendant alarm in case they cannot reach the nurse call system or pull cord. The alarms ring in the Nurse’s Station and someone will respond immediately. There is no extra charge for the pendant.
Who pays the utilities?
We cover water, sewage, basic cable and trash pick-up. Each resident pays their own electricity, telephone service and internet service.
How often do fees increase?
Fees are reviewed annually based on changes in operating costs like utilities, food and cost of living. We take pride in managing our resources and try to keep increases to a minimum. We notify our retirement community residents in writing at least 30 days prior to a change.
Do you have a wellness program?
Yes. The Wellness Center is located on the third floor of the main building and includes the following services:
- Blood pressure checks
- Blood sugar checks
- Informational pamphlets
- Programs such as Arthritis Foundation exercise and Tai Chi classes
- Podiatry clinic
- Equipped exercise room
What is the application process?
Each resident completes an application with background information as well as financial information. Next, your physician completes the Health and Physical form with your medical history. Once our Director of Nursing receives the H and P, she meets with you to assess your level of care. This information must be completed within a 30 day window of admission. A PPD or chest x-ray for tuberculosis screening is also required before you can move to Roanoke United Methodist Home.
